I am reminded of this picture by RedneckPrincess’ post.
This picture was taken in Yachiyo, Chiba, May, last year.

  Yes, the flag is with the Japanese writing.
  Usually, “hata” means a flag in Japanese.
  A vertically long flag like that is called “nobori” .
